Pixel might be making fun of the iPhone now for being able to share its battery wirelessly, but it could end soon once the Cupertino giant pushes a new patent concept: through-display wireless charging.

One of Apple’s patent proposals has been approved recently, and it might excite fans waiting for the wireless charging capability for iPhones. Titled “Through-Display Wireless Charging,” the patent plans to allow other devices to wirelessly charge on its device using its display as the main charging pad. Interestingly, according to the patent, it seems Apple is considering bringing this feature to its iPhone and iPad creations. In one section, the document describes the feature of being able to charge a “stylus or other accessory” on the device’s front surface.

What makes the concept different is the placing of the accessory or the device that will be charged. As per Apple’s document, the vision is to directly have the wireless charging process using the display of the iPhone or iPad, allowing users to still have a view of the device’s screen.

The idea makes sense since the back of iPhones has a rather bulky camera module, which could be problematic in laying another device flat on its surface. Using the screen, however, will certainly make that possible.

This should be one of the promising things iPhones and iPads could have, but it is important to note that it might still take years for this wireless charging ability to arrive. Also, you can’t expect it to be enabled on your current iPhones or iPads via a software update, as it will apparently need certain hardware to work. Moreover, in case Apple really wants to push it, it might need to make significant changes on future iPhone and iPad displays to ensure they can resist all possible scratches from serving as a wireless charging pad.
