You must have experienced that your iPhone’s volume at times keeps on increasing or decreasing without you doing it. Although it is not a concerning issue as it can be rectified with easy methods, if we specifically talk about the reasons, then it could be any of the following-

  • An issue with your iPhone’s cover.
  • Some minor iOS glitches
  • System issue
  • Error due to any connection accessory
  • Hardware issue

All these issues could be one of the reasons why your device’s volume is going up and down automatically.

Ways to fix your iPhone volume increasing/decreasing on its own

Now that you know all the possible reasons for this issue, here are some of the solutions that you can for sure try and see if it works.

1- Restart your iPhone

Okay, so as we always say, it is good to start with the basics instead of going too technical. Restarting your phone is one of the easiest yet workable methods that you should try on. It usually comes in handy if the issue is some temporary glitch in your phone. All you need to do is to restart it and see if it works. Even though it is easy, we will share the restart method for your iPhones-

  • For iPhone 8 and older models- For these, you need to hold the top button until you see that it has turned off. Once done, again press and hold the same power button for a few minutes and it will be turned on.
  • For iPhone X, 11 and later- If you’re using a current iPhone, then to power it off, you need to press and hold the power button and volume up button at the same time and drag the slider to power off. Once done, hold the power button for some seconds and turn it on.

2- Disable the Attention-Aware Feature

If you’re not using older iPhone models such as 8 or below, then you will have this feature called Attention Aware in your device. The feature basically aids in adjusting the volume using your face ID feature. So the chances are that it is detecting it and you’re facing this up-and-down volume issue in your device. To disable it, the following are the steps to be taken-

  • First, go to your settings.
  • Tap on Face ID and the Passcode option visible.
  • You can find the Attention Aware option. Toggle it off.

3- Disable the change with buttons option

One more reason why you’re facing this issue could be related to this feature where you can easily adjust your iPhone’s volume through the buttons even while your phone is ringing. To complete the process, you need to follow the given steps-

  • First, go to settings.
  • From the list, click on Sounds and Haptics
  • You can find the option Change with buttons. Toggle off the option.

Note- If you have tried this and you’re still not able to control it, try dragging the ringer and alerts slider for the same.

4- Change your iPhone case

You might not find it a suitable method but if the issue is troubling you too much, then it is also advisable to try removing your iPhone case once and see if you’re able to fix the issue or not. At times, when you’re either using the same cover for very long or using a low-quality one, your iPhone case may start causing some pressure on the buttons and that is why you may find it going up and down even when you’re not touching it.

To know if the issue is with your cover, it is recommended to remove the cover once and see if the problem persists or not. If it still is there, then there’s nothing wrong with your cover.

5- Disable the reduce loud sound settings

There is one more setting that may be causing the issue for you. If you have tried seeing the settings feature, then you know that there’s a feature called to reduce the loud sound which will automatically reduce the sound if it detects that it is loud. Also, you can set a maximum volume threshold to set it. If you disable the issue, you may be able to fix this issue. Following are the steps to complete the process-

  • First, open your iPhone and go to settings.
  • Now go to  Sounds and Haptics
  • Tap on Headphone Audio
  • Click Headphone safety and save.

6- Reset all the settings

One more thing that you can do is reset all your existing settings so that you will be back to the default settings and if mistakenly you made a setting due to which the issue is causing, it will be back to normal. However, please know that while doing it, your phone’s settings will be back to default and thus, you will again need to make all the custom settings that you had earlier.

To do that, follow these steps-

  • First, go to settings.
  • Tap on General and hover on to Reset option.
  • Now tap on Reset All Settings and that’s it.

7- Downgrade to an old version

At times when you have recently updated your iOS version, you may start experiencing a few glitches such as not being able to use the volume button and more. It may be the issue happening due to the current version glitch and the best option to avoid it is to switch back to the older version. To downgrade your device, you can use the recovery mode option or the iTunes method. However, if you’re not able to do both, there are a few third-party applications available as well but we do not recommend our users use it though.

8- Update your device

Lastly, if nothing works out, you can also check if there’s any software update available to your device or not. As we said above, the issue could be in the version and that is why you are experiencing the issue. To sort it, you must update the device and the following are the steps to complete the process-

  • First, go to settings.
  • Tap on General.
  • Click on Software Update.
  • Now let the device check if there’s any update available. If there is, you can find it below.
  • Tap on Download and install it.
