Apple CEO Tim Cook has recently revealed that the company plans to hire more talent to work on its AI projects. The announcement is interesting, especially with many tech giants implementing hiring freeze and layoffs these days. (via BBC)
The executive revealed the plan when asked about employment alongside AI plans during his visit to the United Kingdom. Aside from “hiring in that area [AI],” Cook said there are expectations about investment increases.
The news should help Apple further gain presence in the AI war, which is now dominated by Microsoft and Google, which unveiled Bing Chat and Bard months ago, respectively. The two creations’ announcement stirred speculation that Apple is now numerous steps behind the giants in the AI battle. However, Apple addressed this, saying AI is already being used in its different products and features. Cook has reiterated this.
“It’s literally everywhere on our products and of course we’re also researching generative AI as well, so we have a lot going on,” the CEO said.
In iOS 17, the company also boosted different features by upgrading its machine learning. For instance, Apple said autocorrection in iOS 17 is now better as users could personalize them by training them using on-device ML. This means your keyboard should learn your typing behavior, preventing it from suggesting unnecessary words like “ducking” when you want to cuss.
The company also introduced Personal Voice, allowing users to produce a synthetic voice. The idea behind the feature is to give people at risk of losing their voices a tool they can use to immortalize them. Users will only need to provide samples of their voices, and the tool will then be processed to generate the synthetic voice copy that can be used with Apple’s Live Speech. Apple said Personal Voice would only use on-device machine learning, assuring the voice data of users won’t be used or accessed by others.
ML is also expected in the Journal app, which should be released in the next updates of iOS 17 later this year.
