Apple Wallet is a handy digital wallet app that can help you store a variety of important identity documents, including transit cards, boarding passes, tickets, car keys, and more.
The feature allows you to access them all in one place just by using your iPhone or Apple Watch. Nonetheless, as Apple continues to stress, your IDs in Wallet are secured. It uses the same security technology as Apple Pay, and only you can access it using Face ID or Touch ID.
However, the availability of the feature is currently very limited. While different states (Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Utah) in the US already allow digital IDs, only four states support IDs in Apple Wallet. These states are:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Maryland
As such, you can use your IDs in your Apple Wallet at TSA security checkpoints in these airports:
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
- Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
- Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
Using your IDs in places that support it via Apple Wallet makes it easier to validate your identity. You simply need to tap your iPhone or Apple Watch into an NFC reader machine and verify the presentation of the document through a simple double click of your device’s button. This also works with some participating businesses.
This makes it as easy as using your Apple Pay during checkout at a store. Nonetheless, in order for the feature to work, it is important to note that you will need an iPhone 8 or later or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with the latest version of iOS or watchOS updates, respectively. Also, your Face ID or Touch ID should be turned on.
To add an ID to your Wallet, simply follow the steps below:
- Launch Apple Wallet and tap the + sign.
- Tap Driver’s License or State ID, and choose your state.
- Choose between “Add to iPhone and Apple Watch” and “Add to iPhone only.”
- Scan the ID you want to add to your Wallet. Do it to the front and back of the ID.
- Confirm your identity by following some steps that will appear, including taking a selfie shot using a plain background.
- Send your ID to your state by tapping “Continue with Face ID” and wait for approval.
