iPhone has taken center stage in the initial vision of OpenAI and former Apple designer Jony Ive for their venture. According to the Financial Times, the two parties are now communicating with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, who will offer the $1 billion investment to build “the iPhone of artificial intelligence.”
According to the report, the project views the iPhone as the main reason that changed the market’s view of the mobile internet. With this and given Ive’s significant work at Apple, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wants the former Apple designer and his agency LoveFrom to aid in the creation of its first consumer device.
Financial Times reports:
Altman and Ive have held brainstorming sessions at the designer’s San Francisco studio about what a new consumer product centered on OpenAI’s technology would look like, the people said.
They hope to create a more natural and intuitive user experience for interacting with AI, in the way that the iPhone’s innovations in touchscreen computing unleashed the mass-market potential of the mobile internet.
The process of identifying a design or device remains at an early stage with many different ideas on the table, they said.
In the end, while the report describes the discussion as “serious,” it notes that it still hasn’t produced an agreement or deal between the parties involved. As such, it is unknown when the plan will actually start or when we will have “the iPhone of artificial intelligence” in our hands.
