In iOS 17, Apple allows users to create a synthesized voice. The process only requires the recording of the user’s voice by reading a series of text prompts.

According to Apple, the idea is to help people at risk of losing their natural voice by allowing them to immortalize it through iOS 17’s Personal Voice accessibility feature. Once a Personal Voice is created, users can then use it with Live Speech and in apps like FaceTime, Phone, and assistive communication apps. It works with iPhone 12 or later running iOS 17 or later updates, and you can create voices on each of the devices you own.

Given the risk of possible misuse of the feature, Apple assures users that the Personal Voice that would be created is secure. To start, the feature only becomes available when users set a passcode, so they are the only ones who can access it with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode or password. Also, Apple says that the voice recording won’t leave the device, meaning it won’t be used by others. Moreover, iCloud stores the Personal Voice using end-to-end encryption when being shared across devices.

As mentioned above, creating a Personal Voice will require you to read text prompts in order to record at least a 15-minute recording of your voice. Once the recording is made, the process will be done entirely and securely on your own device overnight.

To do that on your iPhone, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice.
  2. Select Create a Personal Voice.
  3. Start the recording of your voice by following the onscreen instructions.
  4. The system will present you with a series of randomly chosen text prompts to record 15 minutes of audio. If you don’t want to finish the recording and do it some other time, just tap Done or close the Settings app. Your recordings will still be saved.
  5. To continue your recording, just go to the same page in Settings.
  6. Select the unfinished Personal Voice, and tap Continue Recording.
