Once you get your first smartphone, cellular data, mobile data, or whatever you want to call it, becomes a requirement. Having no access to Google Maps, Flipboard, or any other way to stay in touch with friends and family until you lose your internet connection is a terrifying realization.

In other words, when Android’s mobile data service goes down, it’s catastrophic. Problems with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) service from AT&T, an expired AT&T Data plan, incorrectly adjusted network settings on your phone, or an issue with the iPhone itself may be to blame for the problem.


Turn The Airplane Mode On & Off

Here is how you can turn on and off airplane mode on android and iPhone devices:

On Android

Turn On Airplane Mode on Android Via Settings

  • Toggle Airplane Mode on or off by going to Settings > Network & internet > Airplane Mode.
  • Swipe down from your home screen and tap Airplane Mode to enable or disable it.


  • On Android, go to Quick Settings and enable Airplane Mode.
  • Swipe down from your home screen’s top.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode by tapping it.
  • Your phone has entered Airplane Mode.

On Iphone

  • By swiping down from the top-right corner of your iPhone, you may access ‘Control Center.’
  • Find the ‘Airplane’ icon and turn it ON. After a few seconds, flip Airplane Mode to the off position. After that, see if you can use or access AT&T Data without any problems.


Enter Your APN Settings Manually

It is unfortunate, but not uncommon, for your APN settings to become corrupted following an Android software update. If a standard reset does not resolve the issue, then you may be need to manually enter your APN address. Again, not all gadgets come equipped with this feature to choose from.

On Android

  • “Settings -> Network & internet -> Mobile network -> Access Point Names” is where you’ll find it. To get “Access Point Names” on Android 11 and earlier, tap “Advanced” under “Mobile Networks.”
  • In the top-right corner, tap the “+” icon.
  • Enter all of your network’s APN information, which you should be able to access on the official carrier website.
  • Save your updated APN settings, then choose them from your device’s APN list.

On iPhone

  • On iPhone, open the ‘Settings’ App and navigate to “Mobile Data” > “Mobile Data Options” > “Mobile Data Network.”
  • For both APN categories, enter ‘Internet’ (Mobile Data & Personal Hotspot)
  • You may also try resetting APN data on the ‘Cellular Mobile Network’ screen by selecting the ‘Reset Settings’ option. Check to see whether the problem has been resolved.


Remove and Reinsert Your SIM Card

Some people will roll their eyes at the mere mention of ideas such as “reboot your phone” and “remove and reinsert your SIM card,” but these should always be the first port of call when attempting to fix problems with mobile data. You also have the option of testing your phone with a different SIM card to determine whether the problem is caused by the phone itself or the card.

In addition, there is an additional tip that may be of use to you when you restart your phone:

  • Turn on the airplane mode before you restart the device.
  • After the thirty seconds have passed, you can turn off the airplane mode.
  • If you still don’t have data, turn airplane mode back on, turn off your phone, wait one minute, turn your phone back on, switch aircraft mode off, wait thirty seconds, and then turn on mobile data. If you still don’t have data, turn airplane mode back on, turn off your phone, and wait one minute.


Enable the Right Network Mode

To begin with the most straightforward solution, it is possible that the network mode (3G, 4G, etc.) of your phone was set to one that does not offer good coverage either after an update or simply in the phone’s default settings. This is the most likely scenario.

You should constantly make sure that 4G is selected in your network settings if you have a 4G phone, for example, so that you can take use of those delicious 4G rays. Or, if your phone is not 4G but you are using an operating system that supports it as a network mode (for example, by rooting your phone), it is possible that your phone is attempting to connect to 4G signals even though it is unable to do so.

Making this change is not difficult. To change your phone’s preferred network type, navigate to “Settings” > “Network & Internet” > “Mobile network” > “Preferred network type,” and then make your selection. My phone is a 4G, therefore I have it set to Auto for 2G/3G/4G so that it will always attempt to connect to the network with the strongest signal.

Some gadgets only support 4G or 4G/5G networks and do not allow users to switch between networks.


Check for Carrier Updates

In the event that the problem continues to exist, you can attempt to resolve it by updating the iPhone’s carrier software.

  • Launch the ‘Settings’ app, navigate to ‘General > About’, then scroll down until you reach the ‘General’ menu and tap it.
  • Tap the “About” menu option, and then wait to see whether a pop-up that says “Carrier Settings Update” appears on the screen. If this is the case, select “Update” from the menu, and then wait for the update to be applied.


Check for Software Updates

Here is how you can check software updates:

On Android

  • Tap Settings from the Home Screen of your Android phone or tablet.
  • Scroll all the way down the settings screen until you see About Phone or About Device and touch on it.
  • On the following screen, select System updates or Software updates.
  • Tap the Update Now button on the next screen.
  • After that, you’ll get a pop-up asking you to confirm that you want your device to look for and install updates if any are available.
  • Your device will immediately begin searching for updates.
  • Following that, you will receive a pop-up stating that “Your System is Up to Date” or telling you that updates are available.
  • If an update is available, you will get a screen advising you of its availability. To begin the process of updating your handset to the most recent version of Android available for your device, click on Download & Install.

On iPhone

  • Open the ‘Settings’ app on your iPhone and navigate to ‘General > Software Updates.’
  • Once updated, restart your phone to see if the problem has been repaired.


Check To See If You Have A Mobile Data Limit

Every Android phone gives you the ability to customize your mobile data limits and receive notifications when you are getting close to exceeding them. In most cases, these will not be activated automatically; nonetheless, it is possible that you have previously set a restriction, but since then you have increased your tariff and have neglected to update your mobile data limit accordingly.

If you have a restricted amount of data to use with your Wi-Fi connection, you can also set up metered Wi-Fi. In order to verify this:

On Android

  • “Settings -> Network & Internet -> Data Usage” will open.
  • Toggle the “Limit mobile data usage” option on.
  • Enter your chosen limit after tapping the current default limit.

For Android 11 and earlier:

  • “Settings -> Network & Internet -> Mobile network” will appear.
  • Make sure “Mobile data” is enabled, then select “Data warning & limit.”
  • Make sure that “Set data limit” is turned off, or that it is no lower than the limit set by your network.

On iPhone

  • On the iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular.
  • Scroll down to see your overall data consumption for the billing period, as well as how much data your apps have consumed, in descending order.

It’s perfectly acceptable to check the data on your phone, but doing so will simply provide you with an understanding of what aspects of your phone are consuming data. If you have a family plan or a plan with multiple lines, you will need to go into the details a little bit further to determine who is using how much.


Reset Network settings

There are instances when the only alternative available is to return all of your network settings to their original factory settings. Problems with the functionality of mobile data can be caused by a variety of factors, including apps, system updates, and bugs. In order to reset the settings of your network:

On Android

  • Navigate to “Settings -> Network & Internet -> Reset Network Settings.”
  • Select “Reset Settings.” You must tap it again to confirm.
  • Reboot your phone.
  • Once the process is complete, you’ll need to re-enter any Wi-Fi passwords and re-pair any Bluetooth devices.

If the problem persists, you may wish to try a factory reset, although this should be your final resort if nothing else has worked.

On iPhone

The problem could be caused by incorrectly configured network settings on the iPhone. You can resolve the issue by performing a network reset.

  • In iPhone, open the ‘Settings’ App and navigate to ‘General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.’
  • Wait for the resetting procedure to complete, then turn off your phone and wait for 10 seconds. After that, restart your iPhone to see if the problem has been repaired.


Factory Reset Your Device

Here is how you can factory reset your device on Android and iPhone:

On Android

  • Make sure the device is plugged in or has adequate battery power to go through the reset process.
  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Choose System.
  • Navigate to the Reset menu.
  • Select Erase all data (factory reset).
  • Select Erase all data.
  • If asked, enter your PIN.
  • Choose Erase all data and wait for the phone to do its thing.

On Iphone

  • Go to Settings  > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.

If you’re deleting your iPhone to make room for a new iPhone, you may use iCloud’s extra free storage to transfer your apps and data to the new device. Tap Get Started, then follow the onscreen prompts to return to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.

  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings.

When the iPhone restarts with all material and settings deleted, you can either set it up as new or restore it from a backup.
